Real men eat horse in Verona
The first week of our tour in Northern Italy has lived up to its reputation for sampling all the local specialties and wines.
On our visit to Verona we enjoyed lunch at a trattoria that serves the local specialties and delicacies including handmade tortelli filled with pumpkin with butter and parmesan sauce; pasta filled with donkey meat; pappardelle with duck sauce; plus horse prepared in various ways including braised, tartare and steak.
One of our guests challenged the group to eat the horse stating that “only real men eat horse”. This was quickly followed by the men ordering the horse and once over the psychological barrier, everyone enjoyed their meal which was washed down with a local Soave wine – delicious!
Of course in addition to the fine food we also took in the key sights of Verona including the Roman Arena (3rd largest in the world), Juliet’s balcony, Piazza Bra and took a passegiata (stroll) down the famous and fashionable via Battisti.
