Unforgettable day in Siena

Our day in Siena this tour not only coincided with the colourful weekly market, but we experienced the lead up to the famous Palio horse race.  As we approached Il Campo (main square) we heard the beat of the drums and then appeared a band of men dressed in the colours of their Contrada (neighbourhood).  It was the day where ten participating Contrada’s were allocated their horses by ballot for the race.  The crowd was a buzz and as officials drew the horses the excitement reached fever pitch and a few wild brawls between passionate supporters broke out.  It was so exciting to witness all the locals draped in their colours chanting, singing and screaming – a real highlight.

The Palio is run twice yearly on 2 July and 16 August – something not to be missed.
