Gastronomic Delights of Puglia
Tour begins: Rome (contact for dates)
Tour ends: Rome
Day 1 - Peschici
From Rome Airport we drive east towards the Adriatic Coast to the stunning coastal town of Peschici on the Gargano promontory where we will stay for three nights to explore the Gargano peninsula.
This is one of the most beautiful areas in southern Italy characterised by white limestone cliffs, grottoes, crystal clear green sea and ancient forests.
We will arrive at our accommodation set on 29 hectares of olive groves where you will have time to settle in and relax by the stunning pool before your first Puglian dining experience. The food here is prepared using all local fresh ingredients and is something to experience - the antipasti alone comprises in excess of 30 dishes. (D)
Day 2 - Peschici
Today we drive to the Gargano National Park and in particular, the Forest Umbra (Forest of shadows). This forest is the last remnant of Puglia’s ancient forest of pine, oak and beech. We will stop for a walk around the lake and admire some of the fauna and flora.
We will then return to explore the whitewashed town of Peschici with its cobbled streets - it feels like a trip to Greece!
Tonight we suggest you visit a local Trabucco (seafood restaurant) for dinner. (B)
Day 3 - Peschici
This morning we will take a small boat tour to visit some of the secluded bays and marine caves or grottoes along the coast.
We will then take a scenic drive along the coast to enjoy the views of many secluded bays before returning
Dinner: Tonight join us for another great 4 course dinner at our accommodation. (B,D)
Day 4 - Ostuni
Today we head south where we will stop along the way at the photogenic seaside town of Polignano a Mare, a beautifully preserved coastal town with chalk white house’s originally built by the Greeks and retaining its Greek look and flavour. We will wander through the laneways and find the hidden panoramic terraces dotted around the town.
We will then continue to our accommodation in a Masseria (fortified farm) for the next three nights near Ostuni.
Once settled in the accommodation, you will have time to relax, swim in the pool or perhaps a cocktail in the bar. Tonight we include dinner where the chef prepares dishes with whatever is in season, no menu - just one culinary treat after another. (B, D)
Day 5 - Ostuni
This morning, after sampling one of the homemade jams and biscuits at breakfast we will drive through the Valle D’itria where you will see the extraordinary man made landscape created by generations of farmers who built the strange Trulli “stone houses with distinctive conical roofs”. We will then arrive at the famous Trulli town of Alberobello where you will see 1500 Trulli which have been classified as a UNESCO World Heritage site. You will have time to explore the Trulli homes, shop in Trulli shops or have a drink in a Trulli bar.
Dinner: This evening we will visit the white hill top town of Ostuni where we will enjoy a pre dinner drink at one the lively bars and have dinner at an exquisite small local restaurant. In summer Ostuni's passiegiata goes on well past midnight and people arrive from surrounding towns to hang out in its winding lanes and piazze. (B, D)
Day 6 - Ostuni
Today we will visit the beautiful town of Locorotondo which sits atop a small hill around surrounding vineyards.
This evening we will have dinner in the restaurant of one of the most well known Masseria in Puglia. The restaurant is extremely well reviewed and the eight course degustation dinner with accompanying local wines is a gastronomic highlight of any trip to Italy! (B, D)
